Surgery

Surgery is done to remove cancer cells and surrounding tissue. It is often combined with radiation therapy and chemotherapy. After surgery, the body needs extra calories and protein for wound healing and recovery. At this time, many people have some pain and fatigue. In addition, they may be unable to eat a normal diet because of surgery-related side effects. The body's ability to use nutrients may also be changed by removal of any part of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, or rectum.

Nutrition suggestions for people recovering from cancer surgery: If you've had surgery, remember that many side effects will go away within a few days of the operation. Certain drugs, self-care practices, and changes in diet can help lessen any side effects you may have. If they persist, be sure to tell your doctor, nurse, dietitian, or other member of your health care team.

Cancer Treatment

Cancer and its treatment weaken the body's immune system by affecting the blood cells that protect us against disease and germs. As a result, your body cannot fight infection, foreign substances, and disease as well as a healthy person’s body can.

During the course of your treatment for cancer, there will be times when your body will not be able to protect you as well. While your immune system is recovering, you may be told to limit your exposure to possible infection-causing organisms. For example, you may need to avoid some foods that are likely to harbor high levels of bacteria.

Nutrition suggestions for people with weakened immune systems: The following dietary suggestions, developed by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, were developed for patients with decreased immune function cause by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Typically, these suggestions were used by their bone marrow transplant patients who had extremely weakened immune systems.

The Colossus of Rhodes

From its building to its destruction lies a time span of merely 56 years. Yet the colossus earned a place in the famous list of Wonders. "But even lying on the ground, it is a marvel", said Pliny the Elder. The Colossus of Rhodes was not only a gigantic statue. It was rather a symbol of unity of the people who inhabited that beautiful Mediterranean island Rhodes.

Let us first clear a misconception about the appearance of the Colossus. It has long been believed that the Colossus stood in front of the Mandraki harbor, one of many in the city of Rhodes, straddling its entrance. Given the height of the statue and the width of the harbor mouth, this picture is rather impossible than improbable. Moreover, the fallen Colossus would have blocked the harbor entrance. Recent studies suggest that it was erected either on the eastern promontory of the Mandraki harbor, or even further inland. Anyway, it did never straddle the harbor entrance.

Water Filters

Filters are the devices that help to remove impurities from water by means of a physical separators or chemical instruments. Water Distillers cleanse water for irrigation, drinking water, aquariums and swimming pools. They can also be bought in the shops for domestic purpose. Two major brands are PUR and Brita. These filters take away the impure contents from the water. The presence of such impure contents may cause diseases like cancer, jaundice etc and things that taste or smell bad. The composition of filters is based solely on sieving, ion exchanges and other processes.

UV Filters have the ability of killing the majority of bacteria and viruses present in the water and one, which passes through them. Sand based water filters are generally used for more than hundred years for wastewater treatment.

Boat

Since a boat cannot sail directly into the wind, but the destination is often upwind, one can only get there by sailing close-hauled with the wind coming from the port side (the boat is on port tack), then tacking (turning the boat through the eye of the wind) and sailing with the wind coming from the starboard side (the boat is on starboard tack).

By this method, it is possible to reach that destination directly upwind. The heavier the wind, the rougher the seas, thus boat movement can be more uncomfortable. This can feel like the boat is beating its hull into the waves, hence the term beating.

How close a boat can sail to the wind depends on the boat's design, sail trim, the sea state and the wind speed, since what the boat "sees" is the apparent wind, i.e., the vector sum of the actual wind and the boat's own velocity. The apparent wind speed is what the anemometer on top of the mast shows

Villas

A villa was originally a Roman country house built for the upper class. According to Pliny the Elder, there were two kinds of villas, the villa Urbana, which was a country seat that could easily be reached from Rome for a night or two, and the villa rustic, the farm house estate, permanently occupied by the servants who had charge generally of the estate, which would center on the villa itself, perhaps only seasonally occupied. There were concentrations of Imperial villas near the Bay of Naples, especially on the Isle of Capri, at Monte Cicero on the coast and at Antium.

Romans escaped the summer heat in the hills round Rome, especially around Frascati. Roman writers refer with satisfaction to the self-sufficiency of their villas, pressed their own oil, a symptom of the increasing economic fragmentation of the Roman Empire. When complete working villas were donated to the Christian church, they served as the basis for monasteries that survived the disruptions of the Gothic War and the Lombard’s. An outstanding example of such a villa-turned-monastery was Monte cassino.
